Prohormones vs SARMs: What is the Difference Really?

Prohormones vs SARMs: What is the Difference Really?

This is one of the most common questions we get here at Supplement Warehouse. What is the difference between prohormones and SARMS. And before we get into answering this question. We want to make one thing clear. We do not support the use of SARMS by humans. They should only be used for testing and clinical reasons only. And we do not and never will sell SARMs. Ok, we got that out of the way. If you are still with us, lets move onto why you are here.

What is a SARM?

SARMS stand for Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators. The can be considered similar to anabolic steroids for the properties they have, but with the reduced androgenic side effects and overall gains. Some people call them "watered down" steroids. They still target certain androgen receptors in the different muscle tissues in the body, not all of them like steroids, and they don't effect your organs, such as the liver and prostate, as much as steroids would.

Ok...this is starting to seem like I am comparing steroids to SARMs. I'm not, I am just explaining what SARMs are and what they act like.

You will gain mass, strength and lean muscle mass. That is for certain. And some SARMs will produce far greater results than others. Of course, the greater the results, the more chances for side effects.

SARMS are normally taken for 8-12 weeks at a time followed by 4 weeks on a PCT.

SARMS are not recommended for anyone under 21 years old.

What is a Prohormone?

Prohormones are designed to convert into anabolic (muscle-building) hormones in the body, often mimicking the effects of anabolic steroids. Prohormones are DHEA based, so it just enhances your body's normal production of testosterone. This is one of the reasons that there is very little risk to testosterone shut down with prohormones.

They are precursors to hormones. What does that mean? Prohormones have to be converted in the body to the target substance or the active hormone. And each prohormone converts in the body to a different active hormone. That's why there are different prohormones for different goals.

Prohormones are taken for 8 weeks at a time followed by 4 weeks on a PCT.

Prohormones are not recommended for anyone under the age of 21. Actually the older you are, the better results you are going to have! Why take prohormones at such as young age your levels are already off the charts!

Top Prohormones by Goal

Trying to decide on which prohormone is best for you. Here is a list of the top prohormones based on goals. Or checkout our prohormone guide here.

  • Sustanon 250: Increase lean muscle and size. Great for bulking.
  • 1-Testosterone: Increase lean muscle, strength, but also helps with cutting.
  • Superdrol: Overall body recomp. One of the best for improved physique.
  • WInstrol: Best for getting a harder, dry look.

Main Differences Between the Two

AspectProhormonesSARMs (Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators)
DefinitionPrecursor compounds that convert into anabolic hormones in the body.Compounds that selectively bind to androgen receptors to stimulate anabolic activity.
Mechanism of ActionConverted into active anabolic hormones (e.g., testosterone) which then exert their effects.Directly bind to androgen receptors in muscle and bone tissue, mimicking anabolic steroids with tissue selectivity.
Androgenic EffectsCan have androgenic effects since they convert into hormones like testosterone.Designed to minimize androgenic effects (e.g., hair loss, acne) by targeting specific tissues.
Liver ToxicityMethylated prohormones can be hepatotoxic; non-methylated are less harmful to the liver.Generally not hepatotoxic since they don’t require conversion in the liver like some prohormones.
PotencyCan be highly potent, especially methylated versions, with significant effects on muscle mass and strength.Generally less potent than anabolic steroids and prohormones but still effective for muscle growth and fat loss.
Side EffectsCan cause a range of side effects including hormonal imbalances, liver toxicity, gynecomastia, and suppression of natural testosterone production. Rare now with current prohormones.Potential side effects include hormone imbalance, suppression of natural testosterone, but typically fewer androgenic effects.
Legal StatusMany are illegal or controlled substances in several countries, but 100% legal in the United States. Most are not approved for human use and are often sold as research chemicals; banned by most sports organizations.
Use in BodybuildingUsed to rapidly increase muscle mass and strength.Used to promote muscle growth and fat loss.
Post-Cycle Therapy (PCT)Required with prohormone use.Required. Sometimes a stronger PCT is needed depending on the SARM.
Conversion in BodyRequires conversion into active hormones like testosterone to exert anabolic effects. No conversion needed; directly interacts with androgen receptors.

Which Will Shut Down Natural Production of Testosterone?

SARMs has a much greater chance of shutting down your natural testosterone production, especially with ones such as RAD 140. Also, the longer you take a SARM, or even a prohormone, the greater chance you have of shutting down your natural testosterone levels.

What One is Legal to Take?

SARMs are illegal for human consumption. That is why when you look at sites selling them, they say "For Research Purposes Only" or label them as "Research Chemicals." This means you really don't know where you are getting them from. They definitely are being made in a legit facility. Be careful out there! The prohormones we sell are 100% legal in the United States and are formulated in an FDA approved facility.

Which One Needs a PCT?

Both prohormones and SARMs require a PCT. SARMs can require something stronger though, depending on the SARM. Prohormones are fine with something such as Arimiplex as the PCT. Just make sure to not overdo your cycle and take it longer than recommended.

Do Either Need Cycle Support?

Most users don't need cycle support for either. Prohormones in the past used to require liver support due to the toxicity. But because all prohormones now are non-methylated, liver support is not required. But if you want to be very careful, you can take Liver-Rx as a preventative measure.

Which One Has the Greatest Chances of Side Effects?

By far, SARMs can give you the worst side effects. Some examples:

  • Hormonal Imbalances
  • Cardiovascular Issues
  • Yellow Vision (Yes!)

But here is a chart showing some of the common side effects from both SARMS and prohormones.

What are the Cost Differences Between the Two?

Both are similar in costs. A two month supply of a single prohormone is normally around $110. Of course stacking prohormones increases this. With SARMs, you are looking around $150 for a two month supply. This really depends though on the SARM you choose and the dosage.

We Talked About VS, What About Taking Them Together?

We do know of some people taking them together, but again, we do not recommend using SARMS, so we definitely don't recommend stacking them along with a prohormone. This just increases your chances for side effects in the long run.

Conclusion

We hope this helped to better explain the differences between the two. As stated previously, we do not recommend taking SARMS. They are labeled as research chemicals for a reason. Stick to prohormones if you are looking to boost testosterone levels. And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to comment below or give our sales team a call!
