What Is DMHA?
DMHA is a stimulant similar to DMAA. Medically, DMHA is used as a decongestant, however in supplements, DMHA can help improve your performance and can help increase weight loss. Often times, you won't see "DMHA" on an ingredient label of a pre-workout or fat burning supplement.
DMHA has multiple names and here are some of the most common ones:
- 1,5-Dimethylhexylamine
- 1,5-DMHA
- 2-Amino-5-Methylheptane
- 2-Amino-6-Methylheptane
- 2-Aminoisoheptane
- 2-Heptylamine, 6-Methyl-
- 2-Isooctyl Amine
- Amidrine
- Octodrine
- Vaporpac
- 2-Metil-6-Amino-Eptano
- 6-Amino-2-Methylheptane
Background On DMHA
As mentioned before, DMHA was originally used as a drug for nasal congestion. Now, DMHA is an ingredient in supplements to help boost your overall workout performance and help you with your weight loss journey.
A version of 2-Aminoisoheptane is naturally found in Walnut Bark Extract or the bark from the Jugulars Regia Tree. For example, one fat burner, Hydroxyelite has the ingredient Walnut Bark Extract which is DMHA.
Is DMHA Legal?
Yes, DMHA is legal. It is a constituent of walnuts, so it isn't a strong enough case to ban DMHA. Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals as well as other companies have been using DMHA in their products for a couple years now with no serious issues when people take these DMHA ingredients correctly. Plus DMHA was used as a decongestant which is another reason why DMHA can't really be banned.
DMHA In Sports
DMHA is legal, but many athletes wonder if it can show a false positive on a drug test. It is possible and we can't guarantee it will or won't. If you are concerned about a false positive, we recommend staying away from DMHA products.
How Does DMHA Work?
DMHA is a stimulant and is chemically structured to two compounds. DMHA is similar to 1,3 Dimethylamylamine which is DMAA and Amphetamine.
There aren't many studies on DMHA, however because of the methyl group of the alpha carbon, DMHA should have a similar half-life to DMAA and Amphetamine which lasts about 9-11 hours. It should act as a monoamine releasing agent of catecholamines similar to DMAA which includes dopamine and norepinephrine.
DMHA binds to the trace amine associated receptor 1. This will briefly prevent the re-uptake of dopamine and norepinephrine into the presynaptic nerve. These catecholamines will stay in your body longer which will attribute to the euphoric and vigilant feelings people feel from ingredients like this.
What Should I Expect From DMHA?
Though there aren't many human studies, here is some of the customer feedback we have gotten on supplements that are made with DMHA.
Many customers say that the effects last several hours and they felt a sense of euphoria after taking a product with DMHA. People have stated that they feel a burst of energy which is great for their workouts and they say that it has helped suppress their appetite.
Are There Side Effects From DMHA?
With any stimulant, people do experience some side effects including:
- Nausea
- Energy Crash
- High Blood Pressure
- Heart Palpitations
- Labored Breathing
Though these side effects listed above might scare you, you shouldn't see DMHA as a bad thing. Let's compare the side effects of DMHA to a more common stimulant like Caffeine:
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
- Digestive Issues
- Muscle Breakdown
- Addiction
- High Blood Pressure
- Heart Palpitations
- Fatigue
Though the side effects of DMHA looks scary, don't let it scare you from taking supplements containing DMHA because DMHA and Caffeine share similar side effects. Caffeine is just a more common stimulant than DMHA.
Comparing Ingredients
DMAA vs. DMHA
DMAA has two methyl groups that are right next to the NH2 group on either side. This binding increases the potency. However comparing the structure of DMAA to DMHA, you can see why DMHA has almost the same amount of strength of DMAA.
DMHA and DMAA both have a lot of the focus elements, but DMHA is a little short in the energy department which can be good because the crash from DMHA is much smoother than DMAA was.
DMHA vs. Ephedrine
Ephedrine hasn't been in supplements in the United States. Similar to DMHA, Ephedrine has been used in medicine. Ephedrine is also a nasal decongestant. Ephedrine is one of the four active components of the plant, Ephedra.
Supplements just use the Ephedra and remove the ephedrine alkaloids; Ephedra is a very common ingredient in fat burners. As you can see from the picture above, Ephedrine is structurally similar to DMHA and DMAA.
What Stimulants Are Similar To DMHA?
DMHA vs. Caffeine
Caffeine is a common stimulant that people often overlook for its stimulatory properties. Caffeine is often used in dietary supplements in a variety of dosages. Similar to DMHA, Caffeine has other common names including:
- 1,3,7-Trimethylxanthine
- 1,3,7-Trimethylpurine-2,6-di-one
Unlike DMHA, Caffeine can be seen in multiple forms like:
- Caffeine Anhydrous
- Caffeine Citrate
- Di-Caffeine Malate
Different forms of Caffeine can effect how energized you feel, the type of energy you feel, and how long the effects last. Caffeine is also standardized from other ingredients like:
- Green Tea Extract
- Green Coffee Bean Extract
- Guarana Seed Extract
However, these ingredients may have other purposes as well. Caffeine is a trimethylxanthine ad is classified as a central nervous system stimulant. One main function of caffeine is it acts against adenosine. When Caffeine is consumed, caffeine binds to the adenosine receptors in the brain. This then blocks the receptor and affects the release of norepinephrine and dopamine. This is one way caffeine promotes cognitive function.
DMHA vs. Theophylline
Theophylline is another stimulant that is similar to DMHA, DMAA, and Ephedrine. Theophylline is a medication that is used to treat asthma. Similar to Caffeine, Theophylline is a methylxanthine and central nervous system stimulant. However, Theophylline is naturally more abundant in tea leaves instead of coffee. Theophylline is not commonly found in dietary supplements, but it could help promote energy levels and weight loss. Theophylline is also labeled as:
- 3-Methyxanthine
- 1,3-Dimethylxanthine
DMHA vs. Citrus Aurantium
Citrus Aurantium is also known as Bitter Orange Extract which is a popular stimulant in fat burners. Citrus Aurantium is full of vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, and phenylethylamine alkaloids. The thing that makes this ingredient so popular is a specific set of alkaloids, Synephrine. P-Synephrine is the most abundant and structurally similar to Ephedrine. Plus, there are many studies that show Synephrine aids in fat mobilization. Some names you will see Citrus Aurantium on labels include:
- Bitter Orange Extract
- Synephrine
- P-Synephrine
Several studies prove that P-Synephrine promotes and stimulates weight loss.
DMHA vs. Senegalia Berlandieri
Senegalia Berlandieri is related to Acacia Rigidula which is another ingredient that wasn't popular in dietary supplements, however Acacia Rigidula was banned due to the presence of an amphetamine isomer. Acacia Rigidula and Senegalia Berlandieri are closely related because they share many of the same alkoloids like Phenylethylamine Alkaloids.
Phenylethylamine Alkaloids plays in an important role in the body in relation to the brain and release of neurotransmitters, but Phenylethylamine Alkaloids is a natural stimulator that our bodies produce to serve many important functions. Phenylethylamine Alkaloids' stimulant effects can lead to the release of amines like dopamine and serotonin. The body struggles maintaining high concentrations of Phenylethylamine Alkaloids which causes the effects to last longer.
