Are Prohormones Legal or Illegal?
Here at Supplement Warehouse, one question we get over and over again deals with the legality of prohormones. Are prohormones, specifically the ones that Supplement Warehouse sells, legal or illegal? And right off the bat, I personally tell them that Supplement Warehouse would never sell anything that is illegal. But let's take a look at where the confusion comes in.
Prohormones of the Past
If you were in the game over 10 years ago, you remember some compounds that were available on the market. Things like Bold or DMZ were widely available and were the closest things to steroids you could legally get your hands on. Within 3-4 weeks you could easily gain 10, 15, 20lbs of lean muscle mass. Of course, if you went over those 4 weeks, you would really start to have issues. And getting your libido back was a whole other issue. Those were considered the first prohormones and they were methylated.
Methylated vs Non Methylated
The primary distinction between methylated and non-methylated prohormones is found in their chemical composition and the way the body processes them. Methylated prohormones go through a process called methylation, where a methyl group is attached to the molecule. This alteration improves the compound’s absorption and effectiveness but can also raise its toxicity, which may result in liver strain and other negative side effects.
Back to These Prohormones
Due to the toxicity and the way the body processes them, the government felt they were just too similar to anabolic steroids. This is why they brought the Designer Anabolic Steroid Control Act in 2014. This would make these compounds/prohormones illegal, as well as anything similar to it.
I still remember when this was being talked about. I personally didn't want it to happen because we sold so many of these products. But on the flip side, I was a little happy about it, because I knew the issues that could happen if users weren't listening to the exact directions on how to take them. They really could hurt you.
So overnight, dozens and dozens of prohormones (all were methylated at that time) were illegal. You could no longer legally sell them or legally buy them.
So, What Prohormones are Legal Now?
The prohormones of today are 100% legal. Prohormones now are DHEA based and go through a different type of two step process to turn into different compounds within the body. Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals especially has led the way to make sure all their products are 100% compliant with the laws within the USA. And while these are not as strong as prohormones were 10+ years ago, they are far more safer, and still give you some amazing results in the gym!
